The Faculty of Science was one of the founding Faculties (others being Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts), when the University of Calabar commenced academic work in October 1976. The affairs of the Faculty were piloted by eminent scholars as indicated in the table below.
At the 203rd Meeting of the Senate of the University of Calabar held on 28th May, 2015, the erstwhile Faculty of Science was split into two Faculties viz. Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences. With thanks and sincere appreciation to the Almighty God, I welcome you to the Faculty of Physical Sciences, which commenced full academic activities with six Departments on October 1, 2015 with Professor Benedict Iserom Ita as her Pioneer Dean.
The Faculty has an exciting and extensive portfolio of programmes with strong reputation for academic quality. There are six (6) Academic Departments and eight (8) programmes in the Faculty. The Departments are Computer Science, Geology, Physics, Pure & Applied Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics. Each Department has a well-articulated specific mission and objectives, as well as its specific academic programmes, in line with the vision and mission of the Faculty. With a view to producing employable graduates, all programmes were designed to give the graduates independent thoughts, creativity, and resourcefulness comparable with graduates all over the world. The curricula of the programmes are very robust, current and comparable to the best in the world. The respective curricula also meet and surpass the basic academic standards prescribed by regulatory authorities in Nigeria.
The Department of Physics runs programmes in Pure Physics and Geophysics. The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry runs programmes in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry. The Department of Geology runs programme in Geology. Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science also run programmes in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, respectively. This is a research-rich, professional Faculty with a global reputation for academic quality. We conduct ground-breaking research that is responsive to the science & technology, health & well-being, economic, social as well as the cultural needs for the communities.
As a Faculty, we support free and open intellectual inquiry and diversity of expressions. We sustain excellence in teaching, research, creativity and innovation. We reward merit and discourage mediocrity. We promote integrity and encourage mentorship among Faculty members. We treat our colleagues and students likewise with dignity, respect and fairness. We promote Cross-Cultural and Cross-National understanding among sister Faculties within and outside our University.
