FACULTY OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES

2 PROF. AYI A. AYI OCT. 2018 2024

Faculty of Physical Sciences is one of the two faculties created from the former Faculty of Science on May 28, 2015, by the University of Calabar Senate. On October 1, 2015, the faculty began its full academic program with six departments and Professor Benedict Iserom
Ita serving as her Pioneer Dean. After his tenure ended on September 30, 2018, Professor Ayi Ayama Ayi assumed leadership and led for two successive tenures of four years, from 1st October 2018 to March 30th 2023.

The faculty is well-known for its high standards of academic excellence and offers a wide range of fascinating programs. It has six (6) academic departments that house eight (8) programs. Computer Science, Geology, Physics, Industrial & Pure Chemistry, Mathematics, and Statistics are the departments. The Department of Physics runs programmes in Pure Physics and Geophysics, and the Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry offers courses leading to the award of degrees in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. The other four departments offer one degree programme each.

Each programme is driven by a well-articulated philosophy and objectives that align with the University of Calabar’s mission and vision. The programmes’ curricula are very robust and up-to-date, and they have been amended to meet and surpass the basic academic standards
prescribed by the academic regulatory authorities in Nigeria. All our programmes are targeted to produce world-class graduates with the required skills, creativity, and resourcefulness to meet the employment challenges of the 21st-century technology-driven workforce.

The Faculty of Physical Sciences is research-driven and highly professional. We conduct ground-breaking research responsive to the science and technology, health and well-being, economic and social, and arts and cultural needs of communities.

Our faculty supports free and open intellectual inquiry and diversity of expressions. Excellence in teaching, research, creativity, and innovation is sustained and rewarded, while mediocrity is discouraged. We promote and create healthy platforms for mentorship and
cross-cultural and cross-national collaboration. Everyone in our faculty is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. It is my pleasure to welcome you to a very engaging and fantastic academic experience in the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria.
